representation task - skins

In the first scene of the show we are introduced to the character tony, at first he comes across as a very normal, confident, good looking teenage boy, we get the impression that he is confident because he works out as soon as he wakes up which shows that he cares about his appearance, and also when he stares at the naked women across the street, full well knowing that she could turn around at any time. which she does. He also checks himself out in the mirror in a very cocky way which is done to make him appear arrogant and confident.

His room first appears to be a very sterotypical teenage room, a stero system, clothes, posters etc, but when we look closer we can see that thing aren't as simple as they seem, the posters are vintage italian film posters, which portrays Tony as an intelligent character as someone of his age would not normally be watching films like that as they arent aimed at teenagers. another thing we notice is that his clothes are perfectly folded in his drawer, and his jackets and jumpers are on a rail as if they are in a shop with plenty of space, none are squashed together, this gives us the impression that the character possibly has OCD which explains why he woke up in bed with the sheets being perfectly flat as if nobody had touched them.

As we develop through the scene we find out that Tony is a typically rebellious teenager, first shown when he plays the music extremely loud, not only to help his also rebellious sister into the house after a night out but to annoy his dad, who seems to be losing control of the family and tony is very much in control, passive aggressively. And again when he sneaks out the bathroom window simply just to annoy his dad and subtly prove that he is in control.

when we are introduced to tony's friends we notice that they are all binary opposites, we have maxi, who is gay, Anwar who is a Muslim, Syd who is a nerd, and chris who is in bed with a girl, his friendship group is very broad and he appears to be the ringleader who is ringing everyone up and trying to organise the party, it is clear that if tony says something the rest will follow from the start. he is also very sexist towards his girlfriend, constantly calling her 'nips' reffering to her apparent funny nipples and tries to get her to help out with syd being a virgin, as if she doesn't have a choice, yet he does this in a charming and witty manner. Tony is very patronising to syd as well, he tells him that he is embarrassing because he hasn't lost his virginity by the age of 16 and constantly insults him, but yet again he seems to do it in a passive agressive way that comes of as charming and friendly.

camera angle shots

examples of camera shots.

over the shoulder shot - this is used in the first video at 0:05, this shot is usually used for a clip when
a conversation is happening, the shot helps establish the positon of each person from the other
persons point of view.

High angle shot - used at 0:11 this shot is used to make the person in the clip seem smaller and not as important,  as if someone is overpowering over them.

low angle shot - this shot is used to make somone appear a lot bigger than they are, and to make them seem intimidating and important.

tracking shot - this is a camera movement where the camera moves in a particular direction e.g. up / down or left / right. seen in the second video at 0:30.

tilt shot - this shot only goes up or down, used in the video at 0:32.

zoom - this shot is used in films, its used to get closer or further away from a character, shown in the video at 0:40.

Arc shot - this is used like a tracking shot except the shot almost goes into a semi circle and bends so you can see whats in the scene from both sides. shown in the video at 0:47.

crane shot - this shot is used to show the camera floating up into the air like its on a crane, this shot is usually achieved when the camera is put onto a remote control copters or something similar and then the camera men can control where they go. seen in the clip at 0:49.

panning shot - the camera is stationary but is spinning from left to right. seen in the clip at 0:51.

extreme long shot - this shot is exactly what is on the name, its a shot of something very far away, to give the audience a sense of scenery and it creates atmosphere.

long shot - this shot is similar to the extreme long shot but its not as long, its like looking at the house across the road or across a small car park etc.

mid shot - typically this is a shot of the middle of the subject, in the clip it is the middle of a persons body, head to torso area. 0:35

two people shot - this shot is one in which two people can fit into the camera frame, instead of the over the shoulder shot where you cant see both faces.  0:37

close up - not to different to a mid shot but closer in, as oppose to chest to head it would be shoulders to head. 0:40

extreme close up - even closer than a close up, in the video it focuses on small details like the persons glasses 0:45.

Lester Burnham - Repesentation

Lester Burnham is the lead character in the 1999 film 'American Beauty' - played by Kevin Spacey.

In the first scene of american beauty I got the feeling that Lester was a lonely, and single man. I was under this impression because he woke up alone, no wife by his side and he just looked like he wanted to give up on the day before it had even began. The way that his bedroom is set out also suggests that he lives a very monotonous life, very bland colours, plain walls, plain bed sheets, it doesnt look like anyone actually lives there, it just looks like a cheap hotel room that he has rented for the night. In the next scene we see Lester in the shower, where he describes the highlight of his day to be 'jerking off in the shower' which illustrates the lack of sex in his marriage., which once again shows how discontent he is with his life.

The scene then takes us outside to Lesters wife, Carolyn, the contrast between him and his wife is huge, its almost as if the roles have been reversed in a stereotypical family situation, she is the one that's up bright and early, confident and ready to get on with the day, a well fitting suit and looks presentable, This is another way that the film shows how sad Lesters life is.

Lester is presented to be trapped in his life, or marriage in this scene, first this is shown in the shower as if he is trapped behind the glass door frame, and again when he is looking out the window to see his wife talking to the neighbour, its the way of showing that he is the outsider looking in on society, he is not really wanted or needed anywhere.

The tipping point in the scene is when Carolyn is honking the horn and getting angry with Lester because he is making her late for work, in a stereotypical world it should be the other way round, Lester's briefcase then opens and all of his work documents fall out of the case, making him look extremely pathetic and embarrassing, The way that Lester walks also shows how unsatisfied he is and that he has a lack of confidence.

To show how little his family think of him Lester is positioned in the back seat of the car, typically the child's seat but because Lester has no respect from his family this is where he is forced to sit. Lester then goes on to fall asleep in the back of the car looking like a little boy slouched down as if he hasnt got anything to do today.

Representation of myself

Out of all the UK tribes groups i would say i am a mix between skater as i like brands such as vans, Stussy, Nike SB and supreme, but I don't actually skateboard. But also a bit new casual as i like the brand Carharrt and Levis. And last of all hipster, not so much for the clothes but i enjoy vice articles on the Internet and i like posting pictures on Instagram

The type of clothes I wear normally come from the street wear labels, for example.. HUF, stussy, undefeated, mishka, alife, I also like accessories such as Casio G shock watches. My shoes consist of Nike air max, adidas stan smiths, clarks originals etc.

Although I don't really listen to his music any more i like the way Tyler the creator dresses, for example,   baggy t-shirts and simple jeans with some shoes such as vans old skools and a supreme hat.

Another celebrity that i think dresses well is one of my favourite rapper Action Bronson, however i would not like to look like him personally due to his extreme weight problem, weighing in at over 300 pounds. Putting all that aside he does still dress well, his love for new balance shoes is good and he often wears Carharrt and supreme in his music videos.

The final celebrity who I think dresses well is Pharell Williams as he owns two of my favourite brands billionaire boys club and ice-cream.

However I do not consciously model myself on these celebrities, if i do not like the clothes they are wearing then i wont go out and buy them, and also i do not check up regularly on what they are wearing, i just think that the clothes they wear are nice. And also i do not feel as if I try to act like these celebrities as I don't really see them on TV that much so I don't really know how they act etc.

This is an example of a supreme T shirt, a pretty simple design with the iconic red box logo.

This is a Casio G shock watch, and is very similar to the one that i actually own.

This is a photo of the Alife roses tee shirt, which i actually own myself.

Representation task.

when I first saw this man I thought many things, the first being that he looks quite scruffy, hes got a very relaxed look about him, un-tucked shirt and unbuttoned cardigan are the massive factors in this along with the overgrown beard. But when i looked closer i realised he wasnt so scruffy, his trousers are rolled up, which shows that he is neat and his shoes are also very expensive, possibly red wing which cost hundreds of pounds, hes also wearing a scarf which shows he is fashionable. I didn't so much think that he was a homeless man because he is standing quite confidently, i thought he could possibly be in the fashion industry due to his expensive taste in clothes and his stance.

This man is Doug Bihlmaier and he works for Ralph Lauren and his job is to design the layout for the shops, he has a very vintage style and the clothes he wears may look scruffy but really they cost a lot of money, all the clothes fit well and the top button is actually a sign that he keeps up to date with fashion.

When I first saw this lady I was very shocked by her appearance, she has a very unique style, and the clothes look very expensive, especially the hat and the bag she is holding, this is how I instantly knew she was in the fashion industry, the fur coat as well looks expensive so that indicates she knows her fashion or is in the industry, i thought that she could possibly be a fashion designer for big designer labels such as Gucci and Prada.

This women is Anna Di Piaggi who was an Italian fashion writer and icon in the industry for many years, the top designer brands used to give her free clothes as a celebrity endorsement as she was so influential in the industry, she was famous for not appearing in the same outfit more than once in public.

At first I thought this man was your standard wealthy middle class man, he is wearing a well fitting pair of casual jeans with a pair of converse or another nice brand of canvas shoes, his blazer fits well and he is well groomed for example his hair and does not look scruffy at all, i thought his job may be some type of man who is high up in a business e.g manager, or something like an agent for a celebrity or sports star.

This man is actually Calvin Klein the american fashion designer who launched one of the most famous brands on the planet.
